The award-winning trumpeter player is signed to the legendary Blue Note label and will be bringing his standout style to JZ Club for a pair of shows. Savana Trio opens and jam session closes both nights.

May 6-7: Faces of Bowie — A Sound and Vision Experience

It’s been a heavy year in music losses (RIP Prince, Phife, Merle, Lemmy) and this tribute concert promises to be a celebration of David Bowie. In classic Thin White Duke fashion, it will be a colorful affair with plenty of Bowie inspired costumes and visuals, as well as a celebration of his legendary musical career with performances by the Diamond Cats featuring Chad Romero, Rock Suey’s Rev Looney and cabaret performer Lulu Galore. Part of the proceeds will be donated to the Bobby Moore Fund for cancer research.

The Shanghai Symphony Orchestra pays tribute to the trendsetting German label that has given the world Chick Corea and Keith Jarrett. The label’s unique “ECM aesthetics” will be feted in concerts by Myun-Whun Chung (May 6&7, Concert Hall), Keller Quartet (May 6, Chamber Hall), Tomasz Stańko New York Quartet (May 7, Chamber Hall), Anouar Brahem Quartet & SSO Chamber Orchestra (May 8, Concert Hall) and Susanne Abbuehl Quartet (May 8, Chamber Hall).

May 7: Goose Island Block Party

The Groove Island craft beer has organized this stellar block party at The Waterhouse at the South Bund featuring some of China’s top musicians. The impressive bill features Modern Sky post-punk favorites RE:TROS (who roped in Brian Eno to play keyboards on their debut disc) as well as Shanghai stalwarts Banana Monkey and Future Gaze. DJ Sacco, Sallan Marshal and Cavia spin.

May 7: A Bu

An award-winning classical pianist as a child, A Bu is considered one of China’s most potent and rising jazz forces. He linked with Grammy Award winner Jakob Haendel for his debut disc and will be leading his multicultural trio through a mini China tour that stops off at Shanghai City Theater.

May 7-8: Sounds of Spring

Urban Family is celebrating Mother’s Day at Green City with this cross-cultural event featuring a kid’s soccert tournament, on-site interactive games for the families and many decoration booths. For the event highlight, we’ve teamed with Heart to Heart Shanghai for their annual Battle of the Bands featuring over 10 music groups from schools across Shanghai. As always, each school will be provided with their own charity box to help fill with all proceeds going to assist needy children with life-saving surgery. Li Xiaochuan Quintet
Fresh off performing with Gast Waltzing at Shanghai Centre Theater for JZ Spring, the standout trumpeter graces his JZ Club stomping grounds for one of the last times. Little Happiness Quartet opens.

Nu Yorika Act 36: Dance Battle
UNICO’s weekly New York inspired night presents this free style dance battle featuring 32 dancers. Uche Sam, DJ Caution and DJ S.Kiv present the music while Gamblerz Crew’s Master Yonn and Vault 38’s Guyver judges. Complimentary fresh market Gin Martini selection by Guilherme Valdivieso for all ladies & gentlemen from 9:30pm till 10:30pm

A Little on Edge
Local faves Limousine and Pinball City team up for a free show of blistering rock at Yuyintang.

Danilo Rae
The Roman jazz pianist has performed with Chet Baker and has gracd the Gugghenheim in New York and Venice. He’ll be one of the last international guests gracing JZ Club’s iconic Fuxing Xi Lu location. Xiogguan Zhang opens.

Denise Minnifield
The soulful singer returns to Heyday for a night of jazz and old school R&B. Make sure to catch Minnifield’s upcoming show with Encore Live dedicated to country classics.

Inferno 5 Year Anniversary
Shanghai’s premiere metal bar turns five and they’ve put together a sweet lineup of raucous hometown rockers, featuring Hitobashare, Spill Your Guts, The Machinery of Other Skeletons and Negaly. RMB30 Asashi specials all night.

Bugs of Phonon
The Taiwanese post-rock favorites bring their Mainland tour to Yuyintang with veteran Shanghai post-rockers 21 Grams in support.

Estival Foreplay
MAO Livehouse invites four of the city’s finest - Life Line, Product, Round Eye and Limousine - to take over the big stage. This gig also promises crazy games, a beer drinking contest and free cocktail shots for the girls until midnight.

Eason Chan
A giant in the Cantopop world, Chan is expected to pack Shanghai Stadium for his latest visit to the city.

The 3rd Chinese Grunge Alliance Indoor Music Festival
MAO Livehouse gets loud with a few of Chinese top grungy rockers. Bill features hometown heroes Dirty Fingers, as well as Cars Cars Cars, Prank, The Me Guan Mes, Fangu and The Pace of Time.

Barque of Dante
The power metal band returns for their second China tour to celebrate the release of their latest EP Twinfinity.

The Beijing thrash-rock favorites head south to take over Yuyintang, bringing a sound that has made Radiohead producer Sean Slade want to work with them.

Trained by award winning singer Tina May, Jade Lee is a fixture in Shanghai’s jazz scene. Prepare to be enchanted at this intimate show.

It’s all about that swing at Heyday when the rising singer teams with pianist Mark Bai for a night of swing standards.

Zhangs Duo
JZ Club hosts this special Mother’s Day concert featuring Le Zhang’s project. The enchanting singer has worked closely with Shanghai Restoration Project and is lauded by Oscar winning composer Tan Dun.

Monday on the Rocks
Every Monday, The Apartment mixes Tomatin Scotch Highland Whiskey deals with live acoustic rock for the perfect way to ease into the week.
